Counseling Newsletter

October 2023

October is always such a fun and busy month for the counseling office. We will be working closely with our seniors this month as they fill out college applications for Utah College Application Week. During this week, we will have many college reps here to give us more information about their schools. No matter what grade you are in, feel free to come and talk to college reps to answer any questions you may have!

Term 1 ends October 18th. Please keep this in mind for the next couple of weeks and get things turned in. If you have missing assignments, please email your teachers to work something BEFORE the last week of the term.

SFHS students have the opportunity to earn the Seal of Biliteracy, which is an award given to students who demonstrate proficiency in English and in one or more world languages (including Navajo or Ute). Any grade level can start the application process, however students will not be fully awarded until graduation. Students who earn the Seal of Biliteracy will receive a certificate, a seal on their diploma (at graduation), cords for graduation, and it will be listed on their transcript! Students who are interested in applying can find more information here: Nebo School District: Seal of Biliteracy

Seniors will be applying for colleges in their English classes. If you do not have an English class, please let your counselor know or just come to the library any time on Thursday or Friday and we will help you.

The FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) will open the end of December this year. We highly encourage you to create your FSAID now in order not to delay the filling out of the FAFSA. It takes some time to process your FSAID info. Here's how to create your FSAID, and here is the FSAID step by step.

PSAT/NMSQT Info:

The PSAT is a preliminary SAT that can qualify a student for the national merit scholarship. This is a good practice test for the SAT.

Students interested in taking this need to pay $18 to sign up. Once they have paid, please take the receipt to Monica Carter in the counseling office. She will finalize your registration.

The test will be offered October 10th during your first and second period classes.

The test is only 2 hours 15 minutes. There will be an English/reading section and a math section.
